This tradition dates back to the end of the 15th century, when a peasant from the town of Guadix found an image of the virgin while working in a field located in Baza. It was at that moment when a conflict began because the people of both towns wanted the sacred image. After being resolved in court, the virgin has always remained in Baza, although the residents of Guadix have the right to enjoy the virgin once a year. The "Cascamorras" is the man in charge of taking the image of the virgin and returning it to Guadix.
The “Cascamorras” was expelled from Baza that first time and, until now, he has never been allowed to recover the virgin, since to do so he must do it clean and without being dirty, which the Bastetans take care of with oil and paint.
